Why carbs are your best friends

Why carbs are your best friends

Personally, I have never tried a low-carb diet. It would probably make me terribly hangry. Do you know why? Carbs – or the fancier term carbohydrates – are the primary source of energy for your body. Limiting carbs will not turn your body into a fat-burning machine. Instead, it will make you moody and sluggish because you’re missing out some important nutrients!

Carbs’ bad rep

You’ve probably heard all about carbs’ bad reputation. Carbs make you fat; carbs are bad for you; you need to omit all carbs to lose weight. So buckle your seatbelt, everyone! I’m going to try to turn your carb-fearing-world upside down. And hopefully, make you a little less hangry.

Refined sugars

So, yes. There are carbs that don’t really add anything to your health. These carbs are mostly found in refined sugars. You find refined sugars in white flour, white pasta, white bread, and also in cookies, cakes, and donuts! I know, I love those foods, too! Luckily, we still have the healthy carbs! They do an excellent job of satisfying your cravings.

The awesomeness that is complex carbs

On to the good part. Complex carbohydrates! You’ll find these superheroes in whole-grains. Anything that says ‘100% whole-grain’ on the packaging is a winner. Whole-grains are foods like brown rice, rolled oats, whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat bread. Fill a good part of your plate with these fellows. And if you crave something sweet, fruit is an awesome option! Fruit is full of fiber and other vitamins.

Why are complex carbs so great?

Fiber! Food with a lot of fiber takes longer to digest. It releases sugar slowly into the bloodstream. And it won’t cause the infamous blood sugar spike.

Nutrients! B vitamins, folate, vitamin E, zinc, and magnesium, to name a few. All these healthy goodies are found in complex carbs. Your energy will be through the roof. All the good carbs will make your daily tasks seem like peanuts.
